Initiative Petitions

In Florida, it is the people’s right to propose amendments to the Florida Constitution through an initiative petition process. Throughout the year, we verify thousands of initiative petitions signed by Madison County voters. The sponsors of these initiative petitions must obtain a required number of valid signatures in order for their initiative to be placed on a General Election ballot. A petition must be signed by 891,589 voters in order to meet that placement. The signatures must come from at least 14 of Florida’s 27 congressional districts.

More information on Florida’s petition process, including a list of current initiatives, can be found at dos.elections.myflorida.com.

Pursuant to Florida Statute 100.371(11)b., Madison County’s actual cost of signature verification of an initiative petition is $0.26.

Financial Information

As required by 100.371(5), Florida Statutes, each proposed constitutional amendment that is placed on the ballot by the citizen initiative process is required to include an initiative financial information statement.

The Supervisor of Elections is required to provide this information on the supervisor’s website, and list, as well, the websites for the Secretary of State and the Office of Economic and Demographic Research.
